Validation & audit

PlanLens is checked against a separately implemented spreadsheet model. The same household scenarios are calculated independently in both models, then compared year by year across balances, income, tax, pension, debt and cash flow. Both models were built by the same author; “independent” on this page means separately built and calculated, not reviewed by a third party. These checks test that the two models agree; they do not make the forecasts predictions, and the calculator is not intended to be relied on for a decision about a financial product (see About this calculator).

Audit basis

Independent spreadsheet model

Generation 2 independently calculates the annual cash, super, shares, property, debt, tax and pension ledgers. Its results are produced separately from the PlanLens application.

Current validation run: 23 October 2026

PlanLens calculation engine

The PlanLens calculation engine is run against exactly the same scenarios. The annual results are then compared directly with the independent spreadsheet outputs.

The published results below relate to the current validated release.

Cross-check passed. The current PlanLens results and independent spreadsheet results pass the published comparison and reconciliation checks.

Scenario design

137 targeted scenarios pin down specific rules and failure modes. 180 deterministic generated scenarios then sweep household type, home ownership, life phase, super levels and combinations of cash, shares, property, loans, returns, Work Bonus, overseas pensions, contributions and strategic transactions. The generated set is seed-fixed and repeatable.

Comparison gate

The comparison checks 69 annual output fields in every year of each forecast, which runs until the younger person turns 100 (up to 81 years). A numeric difference is treated as material only when the compared amount is at least $500 and the difference exceeds both $100 and 0.5%. Spreadsheet reconciliation checks must pass regardless of tolerance.

Specialist validation

The broad 317-scenario ledger comparison is supplemented by strict specialist checks for the release features that are not naturally represented by the aggregate workbook surface. These use a $0.05 absolute tolerance against independent formulas.

Application safeguards

322/322 current application checks pass. These checks protect calculation behaviour, charts, strategic transactions and user-interface integration as the app changes, alongside the independent spreadsheet cross-check.

81/81 same-numbers checks pass. These open the app in a browser with four example plans (a couple with super in both accumulation and pension, a single person, a plan with an offset account, and a plan that runs short of cash). They check that each figure matches everywhere it is shown: the summary at the top, the charts, each year’s transactions page and the Sweet Spot calculator, including after a change is made on the plan screen.

Core model · 11/11 passing

  • PASSShared defaults: Conservative = 4% base + 4% dividend (8%); industry / retail 8% (FIX50)
  • PASSCarry-forward cap consumes oldest first and expires after five years
  • PASSCarry-forward gate closes at $500,000 total super
  • PASSOffset allocation cannot exceed available cash or loan
  • PASSLoan payment: offset reduces interest without reducing principal
  • PASSLoan redraw and payoff are capped/recorded
  • PASSAsset sale cannot exceed growth-adjusted asset value
  • PASSRounded full rental-property sale zeros residue and stops rent
  • PASSStrategic external transfers: single and joint cash splits
  • PASSStrategic asset sale and share purchase retain per-member ownership
  • PASSStrategic contribution age and downsizer limits are applied per member

Forecast engine · 49/49 passing

  • PASSruns to age 100, finite balances and no cash windfall before planning ready
  • PASSoperating surplus enters cash when planning is ready
  • PASSAge Pension surplus builds cash when spending target is below pension
  • PASSdirect-portfolio scenario changes selected shares only
  • PASSscenario total return subtracts configured direct-portfolio dividend
  • PASScarry-forward cap clamps strategic extra CC
  • PASSoffset reserve earns no cash interest
  • PASSjoint external cash inflow reaches both members without duplication
  • PASSIndustry/Retail account scenario is isolated from SMSF return scenario
  • PASSlifetime annuity payment and 60/60 Centrelink assessable amounts are exact
  • PASSjoint lifetime annuity splits value, payment and assessable amounts 50/50
  • PASSpartner-owned lifetime annuity does not leak to the other member
  • PASSlifetime annuity payment is spendable income but is not taxable income
  • PASSlifetime annuity reduces household cash draw by its payment
  • PASSlifetime annuity remains a full financial asset while Centrelink uses assessable fraction
  • PASSmultiple lifetime annuities aggregate without cross-assigning ownership
  • PASSempty annuity account list is a no-op
  • PASSexplicit current salary is honoured in year 0 at retirement age, then stops
  • PASSWork Bonus bank offsets eligible employment and is personal
  • PASSunused annual Work Bonus rebuilds the bank only after Age Pension age
  • PASSWork Bonus bank carries year to year and rebuilds after work stops
  • PASSWork Bonus bank is frozen when Age Pension is nil
  • PASSCentrelink: deeming rates are the 20 September 2026 rates in PlanLens and PensionLens
  • PASSPlus: once the pension account runs out, the rest of the year's need is drawn from accumulation
  • PASSTimeline: the forecast runs until the younger person turns 100 (at most 81 years)
  • PASSCentrelink: default indexing equals default inflation (2.5%), so a full Age Pension holds its value in today's dollars and does not outgrow spending (FIX48)
  • PASSMonth of birth: Age Pension, salary, pension start and SAPTO use only the part of the year after the birthday
  • PASSDeath of a partner: the survivor inherits, super goes to their pension up to the cap, single rules apply
  • PASSa pension lump sum is limited to the year-end balance (after growth, less the year's pension), like a share sale (FIX50)
  • PASSper-fund super split grows each fund first; emptying one fund leaves the other fund only its own growth (FIX50)
  • PASSentering a pension lump sum in a year does not change that year's per-fund balances (recontribution case) (FIX50)
  • PASSsuper grows account by account: each fund at its own return, totals are the sum of the funds (FIX50)
  • PASSaccount-by-account growth applies only when the entered accounts hold all of the member's super (FIX50)
  • PASSCentrelink: each year records its means-test inputs (tlwCl), and they reproduce that year's Age Pension exactly (FIX50)
  • PASSCentrelink: with Centrelink indexing equal to inflation, today's rules applied to the plan in today's dollars give the plan's Age Pension within $78 a year, apart from the Work Bonus in years someone over 67 works (FIX50, Mark 4 Oct)
  • PASSthe franking credit is counted once in after-tax income (FIX51, Mark 4 Oct; ATO gross-up and offset)
  • PASSdefined benefit pensions follow the ATO and Centrelink rules (FIX58, Mark 4 Oct)
  • PASSowned annuities in Assets (indexation, Centrelink 84 rule); planned purchases from super in Planning (FIX60, Mark 4 Oct)
  • PASSannuity bought from super or from cash in a Planning popup, one or both of you; cash-bought payments partly taxable (FIX61, Mark 4 Oct)
  • PASSan annuity from super uses only super sold in the source list; the sale becomes a rollover, not cash (FIX63, Mark 4 Oct)
  • PASSjoint (reversionary) lifetime annuity continues to the surviving partner at a %, in Assets and Planning (FIX67, Mark 5 Oct)
  • PASSIncome matches Shares and the engine: account type from Assets, rollovers are not SG, plan yields as the engine uses them (FIX73, Mark 5 Oct)
  • PASSShares takes franking % from the Assets account (one setting); franking history labelled as an estimate (FIX74, Mark 5 Oct)
  • PASSwhat-if tests (poor first decade, market crashes with Mild/Moderate/Large, random run) run on top of the plan in the full PlanLens charts; dividends kept but cut in crashes; section 2 is probability only (FIX81, Mark 6 Oct)
  • PASSplan hand-offs found by the end-to-end plan QC: SMSF trading cash is an SMSF account at its own rate; one cash rate for every screen; every frame gets your properties; a property sale puts its loan payoff into Planning; a year that spends more cash than it has makes the plan not valid (no automatic fix); no unfunded spending while shares remain (FIX94, FIX94b, FIX94c, Mark 6-7 Oct)
  • PASStransition to retirement (TTR) chosen in People draws 4% to 10% of accumulation from 60 until retirement or 65, tax-free, and is saved to cash when not spent (FIX95, Mark 7 Oct)
  • PASSretirement month stops salary and drawdown month starts the pension in that month, never before retirement before 65 (FIX95c, Mark 7 Oct)
  • PASScaps move in the law's steps: concessional cap $2,500 (AWOTE), NCC 4x, general transfer balance cap $100,000 (CPI), personal cap by proportional indexation, DB income cap = cap / 16 (FIX95h, Mark 8 Oct)
  • PASSeach indexed amount has its own index: Wages growth (AWOTE) for the contribution caps, Tax offset indexing for LITO, SAPTO and Medicare (default = Centrelink); Free assumptions have no SOURCE column (FIX95i, Mark 8 Oct)

  • PASSenabled Home tips invoke popup 1 after window load
  • PASSfirst initialization keeps the intro open until Close, Open tips or the tips icon is chosen
  • PASSBuild page tips keep their step while the next anchor is temporarily unavailable
  • PASSfloating switch OFF then ON really clears tour state and restarts tips
  • PASSfirst tips enable gets a delayed non-destructive retry
  • PASSevery Income Plan band shares one line shape, so a $0 salary never shows as slivers
  • PASSIncome Plan salary matches Income-page post-tax salary and full stack still reconciles
  • PASSIncome Plan loan reference is intentionally stacked above desired income

  • PASSInvestSMART import entry points are absent

What this validation covers

This audit validates the current Generation 2 annual model surface, the 317-scenario deterministic comparison, the 195 specialist assertions, the 12 independent property-CGT cases, the 322 current application regression checks and the 81 same-numbers checks. Generation 1 remains frozen historical evidence. The remaining Account Schedules work is product integration/formatting of the already modelled schedules, not an unvalidated financial-model area.

Validation summary updated 23 October 2026. The published counts and scenario results should be refreshed whenever the financial engine or validation suite changes.
